Sporobolomyces
Phylogenetic placement: Sporobolomyces in its current concept is polyphyletic. Species belong to four lineages, viz., Micobotryum, Sporidiobolus,
Erythrobasidium and Agaricostilbum lineages of the Pucciniomycotina, Basidiomycota (Figs 156.1AE).
Asexual reproduction: Colonies are salmon-pink, orange-red, red, cream, or yellow-brown. Hyphae and pseudohyphae may be present. Cells
are ellipsoidal, subglobose or cylindrical. Budding is mostly polar, rarely lateral or multilateral, with buds sessile or on short denticles, enteroblastic,
and showing percurrent or sympodial proliferation. Ballistoconidia are bilaterally symmetrical, ellipsoidal, falcate, allantoid, lacrymoid
or amygdaliform.
Sexual reproduction: Absent (but see type species). Sexual species belong to the genus Sporidiobolus (e.g., Sporobolomyces holsaticus and
Sporobolomyces salmonicolor are the anamorphs of Sporidiobolus johnsonii and Sporidiobolus salamanicolor, respectively; Sporobolomyces shibatanus
is the anamorph of Sporidiobolus pararoseus).
Physiology/biochemistry: Sugars are not fermented. Starch-like compounds are not synthesized. The diazonium blue B (DBB) reaction is positive.
The urease reaction is generally positive. The major sugar components from whole-cell hydrolysates are mannose, glucose and galactose,
but xylose is absent. The major ubiquinone is Q-10 or Q-10(H2).
