NTCC™Karpas-620 cell line is a human cell line used in oncology research, derived from the peripheral blood of a 77-year-old female patient with IgG kappa plasma cell leukemia in 1987. Plasma cell leukemia is a rare and aggressive form of multiple myeloma.

Key Characteristics


  • Origin: The cells were established at the University of Cambridge from a patient's peripheral blood. They are classified as a lymphoid cell line, specifically a plasma cell myeloma type.

  • Morphology: The cells grow in suspension and have the ultrastructural appearance of plasma cells, which includes abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum.

  • Genetic Markers:

    • They secrete kappa light chains and are positive for surface antigens HLA DR and CD37. They are negative for CD1, CD3, CD4, and CD8.

    • The cells have a hypotetraploid karyotype and complex chromosomal aberrations, including translocations involving chromosomes 1, 11, and 14.

    • They express high levels of Cyclin D1 (CCND1) and have chromosomal abnormalities involving the c-myc locus.
