  • Species: Human (Homo sapiens) or Rodent (Rat/Mouse)

  • Cell Composition: A heterogeneous population of cells in the liver excluding hepatocytes, primarily consisting of:

    • Liver Sinusoidal Endothelial Cells (LSECs): Lining the hepatic sinusoids.

    • Kupffer Cells: Resident hepatic macrophages.

    • Hepatic Stellate Cells (HSCs): Vitamin A-storing cells, central to fibrosis.

    • Cholangiocytes: Epithelial cells lining the bile ducts.


  • Key Characteristics:

    • Immune and Metabolic Regulation: NPCs are essential for hepatic immunosurveillance, inflammatory response, and extracellular matrix deposition.

    • Cell-Cell Crosstalk: They maintain hepatocyte functionality under physiological conditions and mediate liver injury during pathogenesis.


  • Cell Culture Data:

    • Medium: Use specialized NPC Maintenance Media (typically supplemented with high-quality FBS, insulin, and specific cytokines).

    • Substrate: Plates often require coating with Collagen Type I or Fibronectin.

    • Culture Formats: Highly recommended for 3D Liver Microtissues or Organ-on-a-Chip systems to preserve physiological cell-cell interactions.


  • Applications: Predicting drug-induced liver injury (DILI), modeling Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), and studying hepatic fibrosis and inflammation pathways.
