Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC) is a major cause of illnessand death in neonatal and recentlyweaned pigs. However, pigs older than approximately8 weeks appear to be resistantto infection. Strains of ETEC that causediarrhea in pigs possess two types of virulencefactors, adhesins and enterotoxins,both of which are essential for disease tooccur.Fimbrial adhesinsPorcine ETEC isolates produce any of fivedifferent adhesins, all of which are fimbriae(also known as pili): K88 (F4), K99 (F5),987P (F6), F41 (F7) and F18.1,2 Fimbrialadhesins K88 and F18 occur in several antigenicforms. The K88 fimbrial variantsinclude K88ab, K88ac, and K88ad. By farthe most prevalent, if not the only form ofK88 found in the United States, is K88ac.3Variants of F18 include F18ab and F18ac.Strains expressing F18ab may be morecommonly associated with edema diseasethan strains expressing F18ac. Adhesins ofthe F41 type are most often found in associationwith K99, and their significance innaturally occurring disease is uncertain.
